Raise your hand if you’ve ever had a horrendous DMV experience. Well, the customers at the Holly Springs DMV in North Carolina certainly can’t relate.

When they walk in to their local DMV, rather than being told to take a number and forced to wait for hours in a dimly lit depressing lobby only to find out you don’t have the proper paperwork needed, they’re instead greeted with freshly baked cupcakes, made-to-order fruit smoothies, a self check-in iPad, adorable cottage-style furniture, a kids’ play area, smiling employees and rays of sunshine opening up from the heavens.

February 2002: Los Angeles Times reported the DMV efforts to reduce long DMV lines by rolling out a statewide computerized version of take-a-number system.

Something is terribly wrong at the California Department of Motor Vehicles. While it’s never been a joy to deal with this particular bureaucracy, things have gone from consistently unpleasant to hellish in the last few months.

Customer lines are snaking out the doors of DMV field offices, down the street and around the block. People are forced to wait several hours for service at some offices — even those who were able to obtain appointments. And the appointment system itself is a wreck: If you ask for one today, you will probably be offered a date a couple of months from now.

A bill signed into law by Gov. Bruce Rauner will allow for multi-year car registration.

Illinoisans hoping to spend less time in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles are in luck.

On Aug. 20, Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill into law that will allow Illinoisans to make less frequent trips to the DMV. House Bill 4259, sponsored by state Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, allows motorists to purchase multi-year license plate stickers.

Gov. Jerry Brown hit a road bump and maneuvered out of a perilous jam en route to retirement.

Brown’s gubernatorial days are numbered — he’ll be termed-out at year’s end — but he’s hardly a lame duck. At least not yet. He still has plenty of political muscle in the Capitol.

President Donald Trump has gone after California’s policies on sanctuary cities, social issues, even how the state fights fires. Democratic voters want to know if Gavin Newsom would fight to keep progressive policies in place if elected as California governor.

“I’m running, yes, to be the head of the resistance, but also perhaps more importantly, to run a state as a positive alternative to Trump and Trumpism,” Newsom said.
